Together Has Debuted on Streaming, and It Could Strengthen or Shatter Your Relationship.
We present a test for long-term couples who are fans of the horror genre: Sit down with your significant other and stream Together. This independent film success of 2025 just made its launch on a streaming platform on Hulu. At first glance, it might appear like conventional body horror, but inside Together exists a deep contemplation about how we choose to love our partners.
A Directorial Debut Investigating Relationship Dynamics
Together represents the first full-length movie for filmmaker Michael Shanks. It stars Dave Franco and Alison Brie as Millie and Tim, a pair who are not married that have been together for a decade. Having wed in actuality in 2017, the actors infuse a particular energy to their portrayals, masterfully depicting both the good and bad of a committed partnership.
The narrative begins when Tim and Millie transition from the urban environment to the rural area for Millie’s job. A somewhat stereotypical narrative setup, admittedly, but that’s primarily where the tropes cease. Together transforms into as much a examination of mental states of the couple's dynamic as it is a body horror flick.
A Paranormal Spark
While walking near their new home, a tempest descends, and the two fall into an underground cave. After a night spent there and eventually escaping, a strange force begins influencing the pair. This force compels a otherworldly bond between them that goes far beyond emotional intimacy.
The entire film is a methodically building of scares, interspersing elements of dreamlike terrors, disturbing (but never too gross) physical transformations, and surprisingly comedic dialogue (sometimes during something disturbing). Shanks orchestrates these parts expertly and delivers them in a slowly mounting atmosphere of fear.
Complex Characterizations
A great deal of Together is solely Brie and Franco, and they masterfully render manifold depths to the dynamic between Tim and Millie. Her self-assurance and sense of connection is waning due to a emotional and physical gap. Her subconscious resentment of Tim for his hesitance to focus on anything other than his failing musical ambitions slowly bubbles to the surface.
Tim, on the other hand feels trapped and separated by Millie, who’s the reason they’ve relocated rural and removed from his social circle. He dreads the concept of completely losing his sense of self in his partner. This fear is amplified by the fact he lacks a driver's license and is dependent on Millie for mobility.
The director's cleverest decision in this movie avoids making one partner or the other the definite antagonist.
Tim and Millie face the sort of issues that arise in any relationship over a long period. At their core, they still love each other. They find humor with each other, comfort one another, and share intimately at times. But below this facade, there’s an inescapable feeling of questioning about their bond.
Symbolism and Metaphor
While the otherworldly presence in Together symbolize these concerns of unhealthy attachment and totally devoting oneself to another person, the metaphor does not come across as overly obvious or self-important. Instead, these more disturbing, unsettling scenes offer a perfect parallel to the relationship narrative. Both the horror and the drama enhance each other in harmony.
A Debated Finale
Together’s conclusion, which won’t be spoiled here, has created disagreement on the story's concluding statement about unhealthy partnerships. Accounts suggest that those not in relationships have seen the movie as a strong argument for avoiding commitment. Meanwhile, certain partners experiencing tension found that the film ultimately assisted them resolve their issues.
Regardless of your relationship status, your own response could potentially serve as a telling indicator of how you view relationships. Will the ending plant anxiety and horror, or a uplifting feeling of optimism? Will you identify in either protagonist and scream at your TV, or simply look at your other half and utter, “We could get through that together”?
Whatever the case may be, Together is an experiment you can undertake at this very moment.
Together is currently playing on Hulu's platform now.
